Response Paper 2: Analytical Summary
For Response Paper 1, you crafted a descriptive summary of one of the texts we have read in class. For
Response Paper 2, you will craft an analytical summary; that is, extending from simple description to a
summary that has some indication, through tone and word choice, of your evaluation of the text.
Goal: To practice reading with understanding and to present your understanding and evaluation of the
text in the form of a short summary.
Task: To craft a short analytical summary of Rogers, Ch 1.
As you read, think of these rhetorical points:

o What is the author’s motivation or purpose?
To whom is the author addressing his or her argument?
What writing style does the author employ? Begin your analytical summary with adequate contextual information that references the author;
title; genre/medium; and publication/release date as appropriate
Summarize the key points of the text
Consider your own take on this text: what word choices can you make (verbs, adjectives, and
adverbs) to indicate your evaluation of the text without using first person? Mechanics 180-200 words; word count should be noted at the end of the paper
Paragraph structure is your choice, either 1 or 2 pars, depending on organization of material
Double spaced and 1” margins; clear font such as Times New Roman or Calibri in adequate size
such as 11pt or 12pt
Your name, section number and date included, either in header or at the beginning of the paper
Counts 3% towards overall grade of 10% for Response Papers Grading criteria Organization, cohesion, and clarity of the summary
Appropriate range of information is included in the summary
Tone and style are appropriate for academic audience; tone/word choices indicate evaluation of
text in appropriate way
First person is not used
Polished work (no grammatical, punctuation, or typographical/spelling errors)
Timeliness of submission (see policy on late work in ‘Information’ section of Blackboard)
