Research studies

Hannah stated, "Research studies show that obese people are constantly discriminated against and are said to be less likely to succeed at work or get into college. A lot of times we might feel like it is preventable, and that those diagnosed with obesity are just lazy and refuse to do the right thing. As individuals, we are all going through life in stages, some have health issues that prevent them from succeeding in these stages. We cannot judge each other based on where we are in our life, instead we should be lifting each other up and showing love and compassion to one another."

This is a great example of how we can see the stigmatization in our society.   This chapters talks about this stigma concept and when a person feels stigmatized then they may be less likely to seek help, which can result in making it worse.  When we label people in society, whether it is because of weight, skin disorders, mental disorders, etc., they can have a lasting affect on the person and the society around them.

Class, are there other examples of this stigmatization of illnesses that you have encountered in your life? (Please reply with 150-250 words)
