Introduction

Ludwig van Beethoven, more commonly referred to simply as Beethoven, was one of the most celebrated and influential composers of all time. His breadth of work spanned two major eras in Western classical music, the classical and romantic eras. In addition to these musical eras, his work spanned two major periods in his own life. These periods included the time in which he was able to hear and the period where his hearing was impaired. The onset of Beethoven’s hearing impairment, at the age of 28 until he was deaf, had little to no effect on his productivity and the quality of his music. The bulk of his musical catalog was created during the years that his hearing declined.

The rationale for doing this Experiential Learning Project is to learn more about this artist. The goal is to educate the reader on the obstacles that Beethoven experienced during his life and how his impairment did not impact the quality of his music. The research contained within this paper will be used to support the thesis and provide examples for the reader.

The design of the research for this project focused on two areas: expert research and personal research through experiencing the art produced by Beethoven. The expert research was used to 2.
