Abstracts
An abstract prefaces a research paper or scholarly article and provides an abbreviated summary
of the article’s content. You probably saw many abstracts of articles on Proquest or a similar
online database. You may be asked to write an abstract when you submit an article or paper for
publication; the editors want you to tell them what your paper is about in one short paragraph.
An abstract is a very brief summary of the research paper’s main ideas. Typically, an abstract
averages around 150 to 250 words.
What’s in an Abstract? First, always remember that good abstracts chronologically present
information in a manner that fully parallels the research paper’s content. Using parallelism in an
abstract greatly helps readers access specific sections within your research paper. Parallelism
also helps readers see your organization strategy.
Abstracts generally touch upon the following points of a research paper:
1. The research paper’s Purpose (i.e., the thesis)
2. Background on the topic
3. Discussion of the main points used when examining this topic and when attempting to
remedy the issues that surround the topic
4. Discussion of the findings regarding the impact the issues have upon a segment of the
population and/or overall society
5. Recommendations/Conclusions with regard to your topic and the issues that surround
it.
Remember, your abstract can only be 150-250 words. So you can only write 1 or 2 short
sentences for each point.
Your assignment is to write an abstract for your recently completed research paper. Post your
abstract to the discussion board so that others can see it.
