Context: during Swift's time, the upper class would gather for dinners and try to discuss the problem with poverty and how the issue might be remedied. Suggestions included: let the children work in the fields until they die, and then bury them where they fall for fertilizer.

Swift continues in this vein, but is he genuine, sarcastic? What do you think Swift's overall purpose is?

Swift's writing is also important because he shifts directions throughout, i.e. he deviates from what appears to be his thesis in the first paragraph. Swift's work shows that good writing doesn't always follow the conventions of what academia considers "good writing." However, it is important to familiarize yourself with rules before experimenting too much.
