The Iliad/ Troy Writing Exercise

The Iliad/ Troy Writing Exercise: Write a 1-2 page paper discussing similarities and differences between the Iliad and the film Troy.   Use examples from the texts to support your claims, and cite the line number(s) of any quotations you provide by placing the book number followed by the line number(s) in parentheses at the end of your quotation. Example: "Your quotation here" (771-2).

Things you might discuss:

1) Hector, the women, and especially Achilles are all characters who undergo more development in the film than in the Iliad.  For example, Achilles still shows some of the same rage of which the Iliad sings, but only in specific circumstances, after which he returns to being a complex but basically good guy. Describe moments in the story where these things happen. Tell us what he says or does, and explain how this comment or action in particular makes him complicated/ sensitive/ deep (or whatever you're arguing it makes him). 2) The gods are also portrayed differently in the two versions, but seem to loom large in both. You could show your reader places where the similarities and differences occur, explaining how and why they are similar or different. 3) There are many things you could discuss besides the ones above. Feel free to comment on any relevant things you noticed, following the same sort of guidelines. The point is to make your reader familiar with how these two versions of the story match up.  Whatever you choose to discuss, be sure to discuss specific things that are said and done to back up your points. The idea is to demonstrate you can discuss the material thoughtfully, pointing out important things to notice about the two different versions of the story. A word of advice that I hope you take seriously: Don't even think about plagiarizing. It's a bad idea for a lot of reasons, and you'd be turning this class from one that you shouldn't have trouble passing into one that you may very well flunk. On that note, good luck, and have fun writing this paper!
