EHR is a step in the right direction of technology. I've dealt with both systems EHR and paper. They each have pluses and minuses as far as security of a patients record. Keeping a patients record is the number one priority of an HIM. Having EHR makes it easier for patient, doctors and other required personnel to view the charts and make any necessary recommendations quickly for the patients well being. The only real fall back I've seen with EHR is when computers go down. Of course HIM still have the paper charts to fall back on. Security problem I see is when nurses or doctors leave their computers open and on a resident's chart.Â
Protecting patient's genetic information is highly important. Some people can make the wrong judgment about people when they know a person's genetic makeup. No one needs this information unless the patient releases it.
