4Drawing is perhaps the most varied and flexible of all the art media. Much of the character of a drawing is determined by the tool that marks and the surface that receives the marks. In addition to the artist's preferred drawing materials, his or her technique, skill, and conceptual framework will result in a work that is as distinctive and individual as one's own signature. The gunpowder drawings of Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang are unique in the drawing that results from his process and in the experience of witnessing the drawing's creation. What do you think motivated Cai Guo-Qiang to employ such an unusual method? More importantly, do you believe that the artwork is the simply product that is left behind after the smoke clears or is it something more?
