The CMS reimbursement policy offers nurses an opportunity to take a leadership role in preventing avoidable incidents causing injury to patients. The use of highly skilled nurses are being used to recognize and reduce medical errors and injury. More than half of all never events, particularly pressure ulcers and falls, are nursing-sensitive (American Nurse Today, 2011). Nursing’s effect on patient outcomes is becoming more accepted. The CMS policy has established an indelible link between Medicare reimbursement and quality nursing care. Because of this, the quality of patient care improves and preventable incidents decrease. Involving nursing abilities in preventing never events is smart approach from nursing administrators. When events occur, nursing administrators must also build a case for additional financial investment. Nurse leaders need to take a strategic approach to prevention in order to achieve a more effective and efficient outcome. By applying lessons learned in one care area to all nursing-sensitive conditions (rather than simply targeting specific strategies for each condition), nurse leaders are more likely to accomplish the desired results.
