Instructions :
As stated in the Assignment Overview, your Critical Reflection will focus on either “The Birth-mark” or “A Good Man is Hard to Find.”
The objective is to demonstrate your ability to think and write critically about a given text. For
example, you may choose to write on how the protagonist in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” finds his resolution or doesn’t. This is only an example and by no means limits your imagination from exploring other topic areas in either story.
You must also demonstrate, with evidence from the text chosen, your particular reading. This means that you will use 2 – 3 quotations (direct or paraphrased) from the source.
The length of the paper should be between 800 and 1000 words. Yes, this limit is important, as
learning to write within a given word limit figures significantly as you move forward. So
practicing to be succinct and evaluate what is essential to the overall meaning and scope of the
text and the assignment expectations is essential to becoming a good writer.
The appropriate register for this critical reflection is as follows: Because this is simply your reflection and no outside research is necessary, you may write this paper in the first person (I). However, please try to reduce the over-use of “I.” For example, instead of writing the following: “I think that this is because…,” simply state it: “This is a result of ….”
The convention you need to use is as follows: Using either The Broadview Pocket Guide to Writing or the University of Purdue’s Online Writing Lab (OWL): https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/, use MLA conventions unless otherwise approved.
