Field of Human Services MTH109 Math in Careers Research Assignment—50 points
Using your career choice, you will work on a paper throughout this course. Each week
you will be learning new mathematical concepts. To help you do this, you will also be
given six research questions to answer. Your paper should be typed and double
spaced. You should have a total of at least 5 resources in APA format for this paper –
one of the resources can be your textbook.
Research questions:
1. Why is math important: Explain why mathematics is important in your field of study. (1-2
paragraphs, 5 points) 2. Making Predictions: Describe at least two situations from the news, or your field of study, or
even your own life in which predictions must be made and a linear model
seems appropriate.
Discuss why the linear model works well. (1-2 paragraphs, 10 points) 3. Article Review: Find two articles from a magazine/journal, newspaper, or reputable online
news source that is related to your field of study and has some element of
mathematics included in the article. If possible, include a copy of the
article. Be sure to also properly cite the reference.
Write a summary for each article highlighting the mathematics that are
mentioned. (3-4 paragraphs, 10 points) 4. Graphs: We have done a lot of work with graphs this quarter. We have looked
many graphs of functions, including linear functions, quadratic functions
(parabolas), and exponential functions. Graphs are a great way to
represent data in a visual and meaningful way. Graphs are often used in
the media to emphasize a point or strengthen the point the author is trying
to make. Find and attach two examples of graphs in the media (if the
graph is part of an article, please also attach the article). The examples can be related to your career choice or they can be from a topic of
personal interest.
Explain what the graph is showing (including the units for the horizontal
and vertical axis).
Is the graph representing a functional relationship (i.e. is there a unit of
output that is determined by a unit of input)?
Why do you think the author of the article included the graph?
Draw two conclusions based on the graph. Be sure to properly cite the
sources for you graphs/articles. (3-4 paragraphs, 15 points) 5. Surprises: Explain any surprises related to math and your career that you have found
through your research. (1-2 paragraphs, 5 points) 6. Strengths and Weaknesses: Explain your strengths and weaknesses that you have in math that you
might need to focus on to help better prepare you for your career (1-2
paragraphs, 5 points)
