Nursing is a forever in need growing field due to the rapidly growing and aging population. Some of the affects that cause there to be a nursing shortage are the following:

steep population growth in several states

baby boom bubble that will require intensive health care services

demographic changes that are pushing expansion of the workforce and the time it takes to educate and train new health care workers to fill those need

There are many other business development reasons why there is a nursing shortage, such as “facilities increasingly raising the education level to have BSN level nurses in hospitals versus ASN level nurses” (Medical executive council 2016). It has been projected that “55 percent of the RN workforce is age 50 or older. Also, the Health Resources and Services Administration projects that more than one million registered nurses will reach retirement age within the next 10 to 15 years” (Medical executive council 2016). With numbers such as these, we see an increase in the number of fast track nursing schools that are popping up across the nation that focus on nursing only and have sped up the process and shortened the length of time that school is required. Because of this it is pushing out nursing graduates sooner, but because of the type of school they went to some are not accredited and therefore the nurses are unable to work. There are many ways that the nursing shortage is being addressed, one of those ways is “Many experts recognize the need to increase funding for nursing education, directed toward nursing faculty as well as students” (Medical executive council 2016). Another way that the United States is attempting to battle the nursing shortage is by bringing in foreign nurses with temporary work visas, to address past shortages. For example, in 1989, 24,400 foreign nurses worked in the United States under temporary visas (Medical executive Council 2016).
