ENGL 1020 Rhetoric and Composition II
Formal Assignment#1: Research Proposal (including Research Question)
Draft #1 Due for Peer Review, Tuesday, Jan. 24.
Draft #2 Due for Instructor Feedback, Thursday, Jan. 26.
Draft #3 Final Draft Due for Grade, Thursday, Feb. 2.
Minimum Length: 500 words (approximately 2 full pages typed, double-spaced). Proposals shorter than this are likely missing one of the required components, or the ideas are not fully developed. Proposals much longer than this may be getting into too much detail or trying to make the argument. If a proposal goes beyond two pages, it should be edited for brevity.
Audience: The audience for this research proposal assignment is a group of your peers, who you should assume know little or nothing about the issue you propose to write about; they therefore need to be convinced that this issue would make for a viable, interesting, intriguing, and original researched argument. In addition, the audience is your instructor, who needs to be convinced that you have done sufficient preliminary research to determine that there will be sufficient material for scholarly research. You must also persuade the instructor that you will be able to narrow a broader topic down to a manageable (narrow) research question that will fit within the confines of the research assignments and the constraints of the semester. In other words, you will receive guidance from me, but it is ultimately your responsibility to determine if this is a “do-able” research project based on what we discuss in class and information provided to you through your textbooks and additional handouts.
Think about what issue you want to research this semester. Develop a narrow, challenging, grounded research question that will help you begin your research (you will have to do a bit of research on the issue to see what scholars are talking about/debating in order to help you formulate a research question). See pages 516-521 in Bedford Handbook for help determining if your research question is focused, challenging, and grounded. Use your research question as the title of your Research Proposal.
Writing Prompt: Describe the issue that you are proposing to do research about. You will need to:
a. Tell what the issue is and what question you are exploring concerning that issue. Provide a bit of background to orient your reader and introduce your reader to your issue.
b. Explain why you are interested in this issue or why you feel compelled to explore and write about it (be sure to include why it is an important issue to explore or problem to solve)
c. Describe what you already know about this issue
d. Provide some of the preliminary research you have done to establish that it has scholarly interest/applications. You are required to list at least two citations of viable sources you have located through the UTC Library databases.
e. Explain what more you need to learn (primarily what you hope to learn through research)
(Note: You do not need to include the above in that exact order. Part of your job as a writer is to decide how best to structure your Research Proposal for your audience.) You do need to include all of this information.
Parameters on Issues: As long as you can demonstrate to me that you have a genuine interest in answering your proposed research question AND that you have done sufficient preliminary research on the UTC Library databases to determine that you will be able to find the required SCHOLARLY sources, most issues are fair game. Because I want you to stretch your writing muscles, however, I ask that you avoid some overused topics: abortion, school prayer, stem cell research, steroids, same-sex marriage, teen pregnancy, euthanasia, legalization of drugs, lowering the drinking age, gun control, and suicide to name just a few. A lot of “sports” related issues may have tremendous public interest, but little scholarly interest -- for example, pay for college athletes or doping scandals. Keep in mind also that moral—or belief-based issues make for poor research questions. I must also develop a research question that you do not already know the answer to or that you do not already have a firmly held opinion about. Research is about discovering answers, not confirming/proving what you already believe. If you’ve done a research paper on the topic before, plan to select something new.
Formatting: Follow page layout/formatting guidelines for an MLA document found on page 807 in your Bedford Handbook (notice this is not an example of a Research Proposal, but merely gives you the page layout/format to follow – margins, spacing, etc.). For this assignment, and all other formal writing assignments, I ask that you add the word count as part of your heading underneath the date.
Your Research Question should be the title of your proposal. Your title should follow this format --What Impact has Barbie had on the Body Image of Young Girls since its Release?: A Research Proposal. Your Research Question should also be integrated into the proposal itself. Your Research Question is approximately 20% of your grade for this assignment. If you fail to include your Research Question, you receive a zero for that portion of the assignment.
Evaluation Criteria: Your grade will be determined based on how well you do the following:
Research Question:
-- Develop a research question that is appropriate for a college-level paper of 8-10 pages. Is it stated as a question? Is it focused, challenging, and grounded? (See Bedford Handbook pages 516-521 for help with this.) Is it answerable, do-able, debatable, or already answered? (See handout “Additional Criteria for Evaluating Research Questions for more on these criteria.) Does it avoid overdone topics (especially the ones specified on this assignment sheet)?
Research Proposal:
-- Convey why you are interested in writing about the issue
-- Explain why this issue is important/significant to explore OR this question is important to answer
-- Communicate what you already know about the issue AND some things you still need to learn through research
-- Demonstrate that you have done sufficient preliminary research to PROVE the issue has current scholarly interest/value. Does it include citations of at least two viable sources that were located through the UTC Library databases (NOT Google or other popular search engine)?* Is there evidence that you read the sources and determined their value to your research? (Including these citations is worth approximately 20% of your grade on this assignment.)
Overall:
-- Adhere to the specifications spelled out on this assignment sheet (length, format, etc.)
-- Conform to standard writing conventions concerning grammar, punctuation, mechanics, spelling, etc. (Refer to the Bedford Handbook, if needed)
-- Clearly and effectively develops and communicates your ideas to your specific audience
What to Submit (first with Peer Review, then with Instructor Review, then with Final Draft):
1) A writer’s memo. In the first paragraph, tell what you learned through the process of writing this paper (including what you will take with you and use outside of this class). In the second paragraph, tell what you revised (including revisions made since peer review and conferences/instructor draft feedback) and why. In the third paragraph, tell what you think you did well (refer to the evaluation criteria on the assignment sheet) and what you think you could improve on. This can include sentence level issues, research, topic management, clarity of language, etc. Each paragraph should be a complete (4 sentence minimum) paragraph.
2) A Works Cited page with your citations listed, as well as in-text attributions and parenthetical citations. ALSO, please put an accurate word count for the paper only (don’t count the works cited page or writer’s memo). Put the word count under the date in your heading.
3) Any draft I have marked up and given to you (you can also include your draft if you took notes during conferences). This helps me to see what we discussed during conference/what I marked on drafts and how well you addressed those issues. I will not grade a paper that does not have a draft that includes my comments.
4) Be sure to submit your final version to Safe Assign. Post to Safe Assign BEFORE class time on the paper due date. I will not grade papers that have not been posted to Safe Assign.
THIS ASSIGNMENT IS NOT THE RESEARCH PAPER/ARGUMENT. This is merely where you tell me what you plan to spend the semester researching and why.
* If you have not attended the ENGL 1010/11 Library Instruction (that is required as part of ENGL 1010/11) and you do not know how to navigate the UTC Library databases, there are instructional videos on the library website, you can ask a research librarian for help, or you can see me during my office hours.
