Unit 2 Discussion- IB315

Unit 2 Discussion- IB315

After reading Chapters 4, 5, and 6 of our text, watch the video Shashi Tharoor: Why nations should pursue soft power. Post 1) what you garnered from the video 2) a discussion on the soft power of any given country (include actual examples) 3) two peer responses.

I had never heard the term “soft power” prior to watching this video. Shashi Tharoor defines soft power as the “power of example” and “the ability to attract others”. Those thoughts touched me because as an American I think we have lost that. Maybe it is my age, maybe I have become cynical but we as a nation are (The economist, 2017)sometime lacking in our power of example. Where I see this the most is in our lack of ability to disagree. Tharoor said that part of India’s soft power is that they don’t have to agree on everything all of the time, so long as you agree on the ground rules of how you will disagree. That is the part we are missing today, the basic respect to disagree. It is demonstrated from our 24 hour news programs down to Facebook. Many can’t disagree without getting mean and calling names. How can we solve our problems if we can’t even agree as to what they are?

While Tharoor talks about India as having soft power, I understand the point he is making, that India is influencing the world more and more through who they are and not use of power. However, Goldlorn in his article Can China do Soft Power? Contends that, “The essence of Joseph Nye's articulation of soft power is the power to attract, to co-opt and to seduce”. He goes on to say that although China is trying to gain soft power no one is rushing to live there and I think the same could be said of India. While I love Bollywood films and I love the people who I have met from India, more people are moving from India to the US then the other way around.
