Lead with LUV

In the book Lead with LUV: A Different Way to Create Real Success, Ken Blanchard interviews Colleen Barret, the President Emeritus of Southwest Airlines, about how she leads with love. This book contains a lot of information that I have heard before, but it is written as if a conversation is taking place right in front of the reader. In my mind, I could imagine watching the two conversing, just like I would watch an interview on the television screen or live in a casual setting. I really do love books on leadership and this is one of the best I have read in a long time, and as it is stated in the book by Barret, “Everyone is a Leader in some way” (Blanchard & Barrett, 2011).

The book is the telling of the rather unique business philosophy that Southwest Airlines holds dear. The management, at all levels, believes that their employees come first and everything else comes second (yes, even customers). If employees are cared for and respected, they will then forward that behavior on to their customers. Many employers treat employees as just a part of an equation to assist the success of a company. Southwest Airlines is completely opposed to that method and has been from the beginnings of the company. This brought to mind the many different definitions of leadership. Both Barret and Blanchard believe that leadership is an influence process (Blanchard & Barrett, 2011), which coincides with many of the definitions that were listed or spoken about in lesson one (Penn State University OLEAD 411 Women and Leadership, 2017). Barret states that most people think that leadership is about a title or a position and is limited to only the few who are top managers such as Chief Operating Officers or President’s & Chief Executive Officers. She then comments that she feels that “leadership is a way of life” (Blanchard & Barrett, 2011) and that she wants all of the employees at Southwest Airlines to realize that they have the potential to be a leader and make a difference in someone else’s world (Blanchard & Barrett, 2011).

Barrett discusses celebrating successes in the company and how important it is to accentuate the positive and celebrating the employee’s lives (Blanchard & Barrett, 2011). She mentions things such as sending out cards to employees whenever they have a birthday, anniversary, promotion, birth; even when one of their kids is graduating from high school or college (Blanchard & Barrett, 2011). While this seems stereotypical for women to do, because they seek out positions to assist and care for people (Penn State University OLEAD 411 Women and Leadership, 2017), this is all done by a team, made up of mostly men, that hand write every message in every card for every employee (Blanchard & Barrett, 2011).

Blanchard asked Barrett how she handles employees when they do something wrong. Barret stated that when those situations arise, that is where tough love comes in to play. She states that “the most loving thing you can do is to be straight with people when they are getting off course” (Blanchard & Barrett, 2011). The type of leadership that Barrett was representing was a mixture of authoritarian and democratic leadership; she kept a close eye on everything the employees did and directed and controlled them to a certain extent but also involved all employees in decision-making processes that affected them and their teams (Penn State University OLEAD 411: Women and Leadership, 2017).

Barrett leads into a compelling explanation if “Servant Leadership” (Blanchard & Barrett, 2011). Servant Leadership combines leadership with love, which Barrett refers to as Love in Action. Most do not think of love and leadership fitting together in the same genre; however, “opportunities to choose love and serve one another in our roles as leaders is what leadership is all about” (Blanchard & Barrett, 2011). In the stereotypical fashion, this would seem to be a female characteristic in the workplace that men would automatically assume to be true; therefore, Servant Leadership is not found in many male dominated professions (Penn State University OLEAD 411: Women and Leadership, 2017). However, is that really true? I find that there are men who are just as compassionate and in and not in leadership positions yet they still lead with love and the joy of service towards others.

The normal business mentality is to make money and succeed in your business. Southwest Airlines has a concept that is completely opposite. Their philosophy to build people, which will then build profits, has kept them in business since it was founded on March 15, 1967. The believe that you can develop the people that you hire into employees that are dedicated to quality and effective customer service, then the success will come as naturally as the sun setting on the horizon. Barrett assisted in streamlining the LUV philosophy within Southwest Airlines and assisted in really engaging employees using democratic leadership; helping to solve problems and promoting the “helping people succeed” and all other things come second (Blanchard & Barrett, 2011).

The book was very short, but packed with a huge amount of knowledge to pass on to those that are already leaders and to those that think they are not leaders (but really are leaders). Southwest Airlines strives to be the “employer of choice, provider of choice, and investment of choice” (Blanchard & Barrett, 2011). If more organizations set their sights on obtaining even one of these goals, women would have much less difficulty finding support in the hierarchy of those organizations.
