From what I gather, Marxist theorists focus primarily on the more economic aspects of society. They believe that at the base of societal issues lies economic disproportion and instability. Critical theorists focus on individuals and how they work, and in ways that individuals can lead to changing society as a whole (Frega, 2013). Critical theorists are interested in all aspects of social interaction, such as customs, institutions, purposes and policies (Frega, 2013). Critical theorists aim to explain what it is that is wrong with society, what could be done to fix it, and provide clear explanations and practical goals. Frega (2013) states that critical theory now has more in common with pragmatism, which is philosophical tradition. Comparing the two, Frega (2013) points out that both aim to describe practical solutions to society problems, and that theory and practice should be one and the same.
Critical theory should include not only the issues at hand, but also ways that they can be solved. This is both on an individual level and on a societal level. The importance of individual thought is important because together, each individual is what makes society a whole. It is important that all social sciences are included which are: history, psychology, anthropology, political science, sociology, and economics. Critical theorists study societal issues such as feminism, racism, social media, world systems, and sexual orientation. Where struggles arise, critical theorists examine the issue and determine possible ways to combat the existing problems in logical manners that will help society as a whole.
