When responding, take their research topic

When responding, take their research topic of interest and recommend another type of research approach to the study of the topic they chose (Ex: "Another method that might also work is _______" or "Have you thought of the _________ method?" - we want to be respectful and professional and not criticize a classmate's method choice) and explain why you would recommend that alternative method. Each response must be 300 wrds or more

#1 My name is Denise. I am from West Palm Beach, FL , stationed in Fort Lewis, WA but currently deployed to Afghanistan. I've always had a passion for Psychology on the side ever since I took two years of Psychology in High School, one year being a college leveled class. Down the road I plan on getting my undergraduate degree in Psychology, which is one of my long term goals. One of my main learning goals for this course could be to finally decide what branch of Psychology I really enjoy and want to pursue. For me, I can say that Learning Perspectives does a better job at explaining human behavior. Why? because in learning perspectives the person or animals behavior are based on their surrounding environment and how they act. People/animals learn by adapting to what is around them, they learn to adjust to the environment and because of that, their behavior changes/adjusts. Psychology can be helpful in any ones personal or professional life , knowing why people act or react to things or how their mind is developed, can help understand a multitude of different people with different back grounds.

Conducting research investigating human behavior, I would most likely choose Learning Perspective. Learning Perspective drew me in for the reason that behavior is all based on why the person acts a certain way. Being in an environment where you are not originally from or know little to none about makes you adapt to your surroundings without even noticing. In my opinion, some strengths for Learning Perspective could be that it focuses on the behavior of a person or animal depending on the environment they are in. People and animals tend to adapt to what is around them so that they can survive, usually known as survival of the fittest. If you get put into an environment that you are not adapted to and fail to adapt you will not survive, as compared to someone who adapts they can overcome struggle in front of them and continue to strive. Weaknesses could be that this method/perspective only focuses on the environment and not other things like biological reasons for the persons actions, or even social cultural methods/perspectives. I think that Learning Perspective could be more open to other methods and even incorporate different methods beliefs.

#2 My name is Tiffany. I am Active Duty Air Force and I am currently stationed in Charleston, South Carolina. Currently I am working on my CCAF (short term goal) as well as my degree in forensics (long term goal). While taking this class I hope to gain a better understanding for why people act the way that they do. I want to be able to put myself in other peoples shoes and try to grasp why they may take different approaches towards things in everyday life. I do not have any prior knowledge of phycology and honestly before I read the first chapter I did not know that there were so many different subfields of it. I knew it was a complex subject so it makes sense that there are multiple subfields. I believe the learning perspective does the best job of explaining human behavior because the environment an individual is brought up in will shape who they become and how they will behave. Since joining the Air Force I have had to opportunity to meet many different people from various walks of life and this class can help me to actually understand what makes people behave the way they doand being able to do that will help me as I start to make my way through the rank structure. Not only will this class benefit me professionally but it is also personally beneficial. Anyone who has a significant other knows that communication and understanding is a big part of a relationship. I believe this class will give me an insight as to why my significant other thinks the way he does and that aspect alone can help to alleviate any potential misunderstandings.

If I were to pick a human behavior to research it would be why people commit crimes. Ranging anywhere from stealing/breaking and entering to something as horrible as murder. I think psychological tests would be best suited for this research because it focus's on the individuals emotional state as well as the ability to tap into ones unconscious feelings and their motives. This will help to understand how they process information, what their motivators for committing such acts are and essentially what makes them tick. This method would be a strength considering you are trying to figure out the reasoning for why the individual felt the need to commit a crime by being able to analyze their personality traits and their emotional state. The weakness of this method is that not all tests are reliable which would make them non valid.

#4  I am from California, but I am currently in Washington state. My educational goals are to focus more on my college education and receive a degree in fire science to further my career in the fire department and eventually to become an arson investigator. The primary goals of this class for me are to have a base of understanding of what real psychology is about and to learn new things of the human's mind and behavior with the hopes of transferring them to my professional and personal life. Unfortunately I do not have prior knowledge of psychology, although I have always been fascinated this field of study, never had the time to learn more till now. I think most or if not all advertisements today revolve around psychology to grab people's attention or try to relate to them. Also, I once had a photographer teacher always talking about subliminal messages in photos and advertisements that would trigger thoughts in people's minds who viewed them.

The best theoretical perspectives that I would think is the best to explain the human behavior would be the sociocultural perspective. What I noticed was that people all have hormones to make them feel certain ways, learn from experience, process a problem and how they acquire their moral standards. Cultural and social shapes people and is why they do certain things or how they behave. While deployed in Africa, I noticed that different behaviors people had were different from ours in the United States. Another significant factor would be the learning perspective because the environment in Africa was harsh and people had many challenges.

I hope from learning more about psychology that I will be able to understand myself more and others in my personal life. And as in my professional life to maybe able to communicate better or and figure out why certain people do things such as arson. But after learning more about psychology, I hope to find new and better ways to apply into my personal and professional lives.

A human behavior that would interest me to know more about would be the criminal mind or people who are pyromaniac that commit arson. And to gain insight, I would pick the cognitive perspective. The focus on how people reason, how they solve their problems and their moral standards are what drew me to this perspective. I believe it suited because the cognitive perspective deals with people's emotions and their motivations. As a weakness of this research would be, you could not observe the person environmental factors such in the learning perspective. But the strength in the of cognitive would be to understand how the person solves his problems and why he does such things.
