3.3 There are two parent disciplines of scientific psychology: philosophy and physiology. Disturbance,
dysfunction, distress, and deviance must be present for the diagnosis of psychological disorders. The DSM
describes specific symptoms of more than 250 disorders (Chapter 15). Discussion: Please discuss when behaviors move from normal to abnormal. A good example is hand
cleaning. How many times do you use hand sanitizers throughout the day. Do you worry about catching
a cold from someone by touching something a sick person has, and then discuss when “concern over
illness” moves into OCD.
The etiology of psychological disorders; please look at the clip from Monty Python and the Holy Grail,
and then speak to the issue of the seemingly scientific method they used to test their arguments.
