Write a 1500-word research proposal on ONE of the following general research questions:
1. Can financial incentives motivate obese populations to lose weight?
2. How does culture influence the experience of people with a mental illness?
3. How does mood influence conformity? General guidance You should develop a more specific research question from the general question stated
above. Draw on any of the methods covered in this module. Write a research proposal following the format specified below. Develop an information sheet for participants based on your study design and methods you
will be using to address the proposed research question. Please include this in the
Appendices section of your proposal. Grading
The breakdown of your mark for this coursework is as follows:
- Research proposal – 85% of the overall mark for your coursework
Information sheet and consent form – 15% of the overall mark for your coursework The Format of the Research Proposal
The proposal needs to include the following sections/headings:
1. Abstract (approx. 100 words)
Outline of the aims and methods and an indication of the potential implications of the results. Your
abstract must be structured and should include the following topics: Aims (short introduction from literature and research question) Methods (including study design, sample characteristics) Conclusion (Implications the results will have for future research)
2. Introduction (background, literature review and research question) (approx. 500-600 words)
This sets the scene for the proposed research.
The literature review needs to demonstrate that you have read both broadly and specifically on the
topic. It starts with some background from the literature including both theoretical and empirical
findings (findings from published research) and identifies any gaps in our knowledge. You then need
to provide a clear rationale for your own proposed research. At the end of this section you should include the aims and/or research questions of the study, which should be addressing one or more of
the gaps in the literature.
4. Method (approx. 600-700 words)
Your method section needs to consist of the following sub-headings: Research design: This sub-section needs to present a clear and scientific research design
based on what has been covered in the module and apply it to your research question (e.g.
quantitative or qualitative, naturalistic/lab-based observation, experimental/nonexperimental/quasi-experimental, etc.) Ethics: This sub-section should include details of how the study will deal with important
ethical considerations, for instance obtaining informed consent, informing the participants
about their right to withdraw, how you will ensure confidentiality/anonymity, the debriefing
procedure, and any issues relating to the protection of both the participants and researcher.
Finally, if any deception will be used in the study this must be justified. Participants: Please state the number of participants that will be recruited and the relevant
characteristics of the potential sample including sex, age range and any other important
characteristics that fit with the proposed research question and why each characteristic is
important to the study. Measurements or materials: This sub-section needs to include a description of any
instruments such as a questionnaire, an interview schedule or experimental stimuli. Procedure: This sub-section should be a detailed description of the data collection
procedures so that other researchers can replicate your methodology if required.
5. Discussion (approx. 200 words)
This section should summarise the applications that your research findings may have, the limitations
of your proposed research (remember: all research projects have limitations) and finally potential
areas for future research on the topic.
6. References (no word limit and it does not count towards the word limit set)
This should match what you have in the research proposal and be both complete and in the APA
Style. Please consult the APA referencing guide in the BPP Library.
7. Appendices (no word limit and it does not count towards the word limit set). This section should
include the information sheet and consent form for your research proposal. Please use the sample
information sheet and consent form as a template.
Assessment Criteria Accurate and appropriate/relevant content Following the proposed structure Understanding of the topic area Critical analysis of literature Clear and concise overall presentation APA style of referencing (6th edition) for in-text references and a reference list at the end of
the proposal Understanding of the methodological issues involved in research design
