On yesterday's NPR, All Tech Considered, Harnett and Kim (2017) explored the distribution fulfillment functions of Amazon and some of our biggest on-line players. These companies rely on sophisticated technology to track inventory, and support order processing and fulfillment process. Many of the job functions that these centers require would not exist without this model. Additionally, not only is technology being used to manage the information about the inventory and orders, technology in the form of robotics helps the employees do their work more efficiently.
