Conclusion Explanation
If you provided the answer to the first discussion question and also provided a
concise summary of the article, you received full points. You must have been
clear, to the point, and on target to receive full points. The Body is where you answer the rest of the discussion questions, beyond the
first one in which you stated the problem. The questions that ask you to
incorporate the concepts from the text and lecture into your answers are
worth more than the ones that ask you for your opinion or for a summary of a
particular part of the article. Being able to incorporate either the specific
theory or model (e.g., RBV for your second paper) or some theory or model
(i.e., sometimes I don't ask you to discuss a particular one; it is up to you to
find one on your own) satisfactorily means, firstly, that you can intelligently
communicate your understanding of the concept and, secondly, that you have
the ability to apply that understanding to the article undergoing your analysis.
You must be able to answer all of the discussion questions to receive full

If your introduction got to the point in a
maundering way, or if you did not state the
problem at all, you will not receive full points.
Up to 10 points will be docked for this
portion.
If you failed to answer a discussion question
that asked you to discuss theory, you could
lose up to 25 points. Partial credit is given
when the student is able to discuss it in a
roundabout way. Mislabeling a theory or not
giving specific terminology will usually result
in my docking you at least 10 points if not
more depending upon how exiguous the
answer was. If you fail to answer a question
regarding an area of the analysis that is not
theory or concept related, then usually only 5
or so points are docked.
Excessive errors in grammar, spelling, and
punctuation: -10 Technical This portion deals directly with format and grammatical/spelling/punctuation errors. If
you followed all of the instructions and have next to no errors in grammar, spelling,
and punctuation, you will receive full points. Small deviations will result in partial
credit. 25% Length of paper has gone over 1 page or is
very short (e.g., under 3/4 of a page ): -5
points.
Formatting issues like funky font, extra
spacing between lines of text, failure to
indent new paragraphs properly, etc.: -10

Discussion Questions for Organization Evaluation 2:
1. In your introduction, discuss the history of Bill Gates and Microsoft.
2. Then very briefly discuss the Resourced Based View. What type of analysis it it—
external or internal? What is the difference between a tangible and intangible resource?
What are the 4 criteria necessary for a resource to be defined as a "strategic resource" (p.
104 of text)?
3. Identify the type of strategic resources—human, intangible, physical, and financial—for
Microsoft. Be sure you give at least 1-2 supporting statements for each type of strategic
resource in your analysis. You must be able to write about at least 3 of the 4 types. Note
that the 4 types of strategic resources are not the same as the 4 criteria that define a
strategic resource.
4. What do you think about the government's concern that Microsoft was engaging in a
Monopoly and the subsequent antitrust suit? How involved should government be in how
a business is run?
