i need to respond to the following.....
I think there are many qualities and behaviors a leader must possess to be a successful one. Honesty is one that should be at the top of the list, it should be who you are ethically. If honesty is a key value that you possess then it will show and will rub off on the ones you lead. Communication is another one that needs to be at the top of the list. If you can’t get your vision across to your team, you’ll never be on the same page and most likely never reach your end goals. You must be able to inspire others, not only do you need to motivate to accomplish the goal, but must acknowledge all their hard work and make them feel appreciated. There are many others that need to be taken into consideration but the three I listed here are the most important to me.Â
Managers by name alone are not leaders but the best managers are. Unfortunately, managers that hold the qualities and behaviors of good leaders are rare. Managers are the middle men/woman between upper management and the technical people at the lower end. Managers are most likely hired within because they have become semi-experts in methods of the company business. Upper management will search for managers that will execute orders given to them so the company can continue to move in the right direction. This is where most companies fail, they pick managers that are very knowledgeable in the technical field, but fail to pick managers that also have the qualities of a leader.
I would like to associate myself with leaders and managers that are honest, confident, committed and approachable. I would expect them to communicate effectively, be able to inspire others and delegate responsibility. Most poor leaders/managers that I have witnessed were people that basically never treated others the way they would want to be treated. They were bullies, used vulgar language and thought their way was the only way. Those so-called leaders and managers stand out in my mind because when I witnessed their behavior I promised myself to never become one of them. One thing that I continue to tell young leaders in my organization is that if it weren’t for bad leaders you wouldn’t know what kind of leader not to become. At my current level, I believe I have the leadership qualities to get me through to the end of my career. Regardless I believe every leader should reflect and consistently self-assess to stay on track. I think only weak or inexperienced leaders are forced to use poor techniques.
