Do software platforms beat software products?

Do software platforms beat software products? Platforms bring communities and an endless supply of end user and a marketplace to sell more. Software products can live forever with the right maintenance and user support. So as a business(thinking like a MBA) which do you think is a wiser choice to invest resources into platforms or product? Do you envision a future that does not have one of them or a future that has neither of them? What are the drawbacks of one versus the other?
