The search engine optimization was a subject covered in this podcasts that really grabbed my interest. Search engines are things that we use everyday, but I had never thought of the power that they had, I just thought hey it helps me find information. However, according to the study in the podcast, search engines can affect the ways of thinking on UNDECIDED people. It is important to understand that, as long as the studies that were conducted are correct, it means that Google could "make" people think a certain way, in this case voting. As it said in the study, it only changes undecided minds, and that there are many more things that go into how a person believes. But if all else is even, then what pops up first in a search engine can be used to form peoples beliefs in a certain way. This is important for the fact that it means one certain person or group can have people vote the way they want them to. And people should not be molded into a belief by certain groups. If they want to turn an ad on tv, turn it. There is no way to avoid what comes up first on a web search.Â
With Obama's Facebook, I say congratulations on winning the game. Life, especially business, is a game. In the case of using Facebook and social media, his group won the game. Just as Trump, won the overall game of Electoral Votes over popular vote. That I say good job and as long as no laws are broken, then you just win. However, with the search engine optimization, this is not "fair". By this I mean, it is taking advantage of their position and doing a forming of information in which a person does not know. If I hear "ad paid for by the Obama administration", I know what I am seeing or hearing. If I google information and only good things come up about him, then I believe only good things are true. If I see only bad things, then I believe there are only bad things. You see, it is a molding of information that a receiver knows nothing about. This should be, if is not already, against the law.Â
The only thing I know to be sure the public does not fall victim to this, is make legislation against the framing of information by a search engine. Also, already people should see the source of the information to see what is done by who. If 15 top articles about Trump are from ElephantDemocracy.org and BuildThatWall.com then it is safe to say the information will be in his favor. If all the top results are from places like that, then it should raise questions. If there are a mixture of sources and positions coming up on the search engine, then receivers are safe.Â
