CQI is a necessary tool to identify the areas that are in need of reform and those that are not.It is important to identify the aspects of nursing care that are not effective and ways in which we can improve. Healthcare is constantly changing and striving for the best evidence based practices.“The purpose of continuous quality improvement programs is to improve health care by identifying problems, implementing and monitoring corrective action and studying its effectiveness.” (NCCHC, 2010).As a leader, I would apply the CQI by including the findings in the staff meetings as well as managerial meetings. I would empower the staff to come up with solutions to the issues that required improvement. Certain procedural protocols may be identified as a weakness such as the ED admissions, times and report. One constant problem is the designation of a bed to a patient that is being admitted from the ED, hours go by and the nurse has not gotten report only to have them come up during shift change. This poses as a safety issue for the patient and is stressful for the oncoming nurse. In order to improve upon this procedure, it would be beneficial for staff to brainstorm or research what other hospitals are doing to combat this issue.
