Operation Smile
General Purpose
: to persuade
Specific Purpose
: to persuade my class members to make the monetary contribution collected to
Operation Smile.
Central Idea
: Today I will convince you of the extensive problems associated with children who
have cleft lips and palates, address some of the ways that Operation Smile is satisfying this need,
how our world will change if their mission c
ontinues to be supported, and what you have to do to
help them achieve their goals.
INTRODUCTION
I. (Attention)
Imagine if you will that you’re in the delivery room. Ladies, you are about to give
birth, and gentlemen, you are there with your significant other awaiting the birth of your child.
There’s anticipation and excitement. Then the baby is born. You know right
away that something
is wrong, even before you see your child because you see the expression on the doctor’s face
change from shared excitement to one of concern. He then asks if you were aware of any
problems with the baby prior to now. “No”, you reply. “
why?” Then the doctor tells you that
your baby was born with a cleft lip and palate. He explains, that the baby’s upper lip and roof of
the mouth did not form properly during development. Finally, you’re allowed to see your baby
but your heart sinks a litt
le. You hear over the next few days of the surgeries that will be required
to repair this birth defect.
II.

Orienting Material
) For me, this scenario was not imaginary, it was all too real. On
September 15, 1993, I gave birth to my daughter Kyla and she was born with a unilateral cleft lip
and palate. The only difference is that my husband was not there with me, no one familiar was. I
was in the delivery room alone. The doctors and nurses were there of course, but they were
strangers. My husband was in Al
aska and my mother’s flight had not yet arrived from Houston.
As you can well imagine, it was a devastating experience. But in many ways I feel very
fortunate, which may sound strange to say, but it’s true. Because my husband is in the Navy, all
of my daug
hter’s medical needs have been met. She has had three surgeries so far and has
another major one coming up in a few years. Not all families whose children are born with a cleft
lip and/or palate are this fortunate. The children have to grow up with it and the humiliation, self
-
esteem problems and medical issues that go along with it. Eleven of you in this class indicated
that you know someone with a birth defect, and out of that eleven, seven required surgery to
correct the defect. I feel strongly that the money we collected should be donated to Operation
Smile, because of the wonderful way they touch the lives of children who would otherwise
experience a life impacted by feelings of embarrassment and shame. Today we will convince you

that Operation Smile is satisfying this need, how our world will change if their mission continues
to be supported, and what you have to do to help them achieve their goals.

The problem we are facing is the numerous children born with cleft lips and palates, a
birth defect that causes emotional and medical concerns.

Picture the
joy brought into the lives of these children if Operation Smile
continues to be supported, and the devastation that would occur if they are not.

I. (Summary)
In conclusion, I
have elaborated for you the multiple problems faced by children
with cleft lips/and /or palates, especially as they impact individuals in underdeveloped countries.
You are well aware that the solution to this problem has been and can continue to be the Operation
Smile organization, but not without continued monetary support.
II. (Action)
