Organisational Culture and Effectiveness

I need to post a discussion on what one of my class mate posted. At least 75 words to give my class mate a feedback.

Kevin

The thought the background materials for this module were all extremely good, with the exception of the chapter by Rao’s chapterOrganisational Culture and Effectiveness, which I found so poorly written and translated that it was difficult to follow or use.  I found Piccolo and Bardes piece on Cultural Due Diligence (Piccolo & Bardes, 2011) to be the best of our background reading (arguably not just in this module) because it included concrete examples of culture, made an important distinction between culture and climate, and articulated the practical importance of these critical organization characteristics. The author was articulate and convincing in his arguments.

I took a quiz published on Forbes.com (Ryan, 2016) after reading all of the background material so I am not sure if I found the quiz less useful because I already had a reasonable familiarity with the concepts.  It was pretty clear while doing the quiz what answers were “favorable.”  The results, therefore, came as no surprise: it matched my own description of a model organization.  From my perspective I work one such company.  The culture embraces a true respect for the employees and nurtures flexible working units that align with individual personalities (e.g. people-centered offices and teams as well as introvert safe havens complete with noise-cancelling headphones).  There is a teaming spirit towards a common goal of helping clients, the staff is diverse and is exceptionally respectful of that diversity, and management is non-hierarchical, participatory and flexible.  Of course I am biased because the environment aligns with the work characteristics I find important; I am aware that my workplace may not be a “model” environment for everyone.  But I think that is one of the “big ideas” of this module.  It is important to understand what kind of culture will help you thrive as an individual and inspire you to contribute to the organization’s mission.
