During this latter half of the semester, we have been exploring human cultures from an evolutionary perspective. We have seen that Culture (or the capacity for Culture) evolved as a fast-paced mechanism that allows for a species to adapt to an environment when climates vary more quickly than genetic evolution can respond; that humans rely on their culture to adapt to their environments. Similar to biological evolution, the process of cultural evolution often equips local populations with a mix of adaptive and non-adaptive traits.Â
