1.) Plate Tectonics is the bedrock of modern geosciences (pun intended). Without the Theory
of Plate Tectonics, much of what we know about the Earth would not work. What I mean
by what we know not working is that we as a society rely on the Earth's resources to live
our lives. From the hydrocarbons that power your cars to the americium in your smoke
detectors, thousands of different types of resources and minerals are extracted from the
Earth for our daily use. Geologist would have a much more difficult time finding those
resources if the Theory of Plate Tectonics were unknown or wasn't true.
Even though much of Plate Tectonics is settled science, there is still much that we have to learn
about the Earth. Many scientists are working diligently to find answers to questions that you may
not even know have been asked. For the bonus assignment, do some research to find an article
related to Plate Tectonics and write a short paragraph discussing what the article is about and
your thoughts on what you found.
You can use the Richland College Library's website to research the latest scientific articles. You
can also use Google Scholar to look up scientific articles as well. They may not be the most
