Activities & Assignment

Activities & Assignment Read the selection from George Orwell’s novel, Nineteen EightyFour (LINK: http://www.george-orwell.org/1984 (Links to an external site.)Links
to an external site.). Read only “Part I” (Chapters 1-8), which equates to
roughly 100 pages. Click on the chapter links in the “Index” column on the
right side of the page to access the individual chapters. Read the very brief biography of George Orwell on the same website
(you’ll see the link to it at the top of the website page). Read another brief biography of Orwell. Either locate one online or find
one via the electronic resources from the Mount Ida College Library website. Read the 1941 article by Orwell, “The Frontiers of Art and Propaganda”
(LINK: http://orwell.ru/library/articles/frontiers/english/e_front (Links to an
external site.)Links to an external site.). Published during World War II (and
several years before Nineteen Eighty-Four), Orwell’s article discusses the
prevalence of propaganda in the modern world, especially in the context of
international warfare. In composing your answers to these questions, be sure to make direct
reference to material from the readings in supporting your arguments.
1. Based on the brief biography of Orwell, in 2 paragraphs (roughly one page)
explain how the events of his life might have led him to create the world
described in Nineteen Eighty-Four. (That is, how does one’s own experience
function as propaganda, urging one to perceive reality in certain ways?) 2. Based on Orwell’s article (“The Frontiers…”), in 2 paragraphs, explain why
Orwell would have agreed or disagreed with the notion that the events of his life
affected his creation of Nineteen Eighty-Four.
