theoretical obligation

Introduction

In 1956 C. Wright Mills introduced the theoretical obligation and ethic for Sociologist’s entitled “Public Sociology” to consider. This new objective was received overwhelming and is currently practiced by all Sociological scholars.  This addition to the Sociologist’s ethics was central, changing the role of Sociologists; from being Economic and Governmental agents to Scientists. Prior to that time Sociologists worked for the Power Elite, profiting both from the powerless and developing countries who had resources the Power Elite coveted i.e. labor, land, oil etc. His logic was simple, these two groups had their own agencies to act on their interests.

Simply described, Public Sociology requires that Sociologists must share with the general Public of their investigations at K-12 Schools, Colleges, Universities, Churches, Synagogues, Temples and any other forum which is interested. This was a major role modification. You may want to pull up y-tube: John Perkins, his words explain the process in detail. I require his book “Confessions of an Economic Hit man” in my face to Face class. His has additional books to valid his experience. The first book reads as a novel but the other are cite and very academic.

The Task: A Narrative: The Final Exam

Definition:

A Narrative is the application of the information you have learned doing sociological research [In this task your class textbook and links] as if you were giving a speech to the general public which has no idea of the rigor of Sociology, research methods, and conclusions. Thus, I want you to outline a presentation if you were invited to speak which many Sociologists are.

Please follow the general outline below, add your own opinions, and use the great scholar Howard Zinn’s experiences, social issues he participated in and any additional social issues the public need to be informed about e.g. child labor, farm workers, School of the America; [www.soaw.org], sexual holidays etc.

Y-tube has a series of interviews with Howard Zinn, the best is: Howard Zinn - You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train. School of the Americas, Moreover. In addition, Pete Seeger has an excellent documentary regarding his life entitled: The Power of Music. You may not enjoy the music but his Biography is very instructive.  As this is the first time I have taught Introduction to Sociology on-line, I am uncomfortable requiring Pete Seeger’s Biography as it costs $ .99- that is 99 cents- dollar- on y-tube. The College is in the process of purchasing copies but I would like you to watch this and hence, if you need the dollar let me know and I will personally send it to you. An Outline of your Speech. Three Parts- All must be completedSimple Definition of Sociology and Methods;Describe Public Sociology and Research Conclusions- No Conspiracy Theories only validated facts i.e. economic inequality;Part 3- Additional ExampleCite examples as any good presentation demands verifiable excitations i.e. “Born Rich” and/or “the One Percent”. Draw examples from the course content links; and feel free to outline your thoughts in this aspect- I ask you to present your ideas not mine. If you disagree with sociological investigation you need to provide validated data not news media entertainment. Remember we only have 4 or 5 media outlets all owned by the Power Elite and they control the information See instructive validation Google: Concentration of media and ownership and Manufactured Consent-Noam Chomsky; Americas greatest scholar Length and format: Your written outline should be 4 or more pages with an estimated verbal 1.5 hour speech allowing time for questions/answers if you were to ever to speak to an audience.  In your outline you may use bullets and no citations are required we have reviewed in the class or above. Any other data needs to be cited using any format you select.

This is a subjective essay, you have the license to respond with your personal options, feeling, and attitudes. I will grade this on two criteria’s.If the data is academically verifiable rather than what I term “dinner table or bar room knowledge indicating prejudicial and social racist false illusions”. Why? Such remarks indicate a disrespect for the social sciences and personal agendas rather than truth. Secondly completeness: define Sociology and methods, Public Sociology and the importance of such obligations and examples.
