Post your Paper 2

Please read more instructions in the attached file.

Objective

Your objective for this assignment is to compose an essay that asserts and develops a specific argument about class material. It is essential that you develop your ability to make points and defend them with evidence. This means that you have to be able to do more than summarize what you read. Your introduction will contain a thesis statement. Your thesis statement will spell out your own central point or argument, and will serve as a guide for your essay. The goal is to center each paragraph on specific evidence that serves to prove your thesis, and to analyze this evidence – that is, in each case, to clearly explain how and why a piece of evidence proves your argument.

Task

We have been discussing gender roles in the stories for this section. For this second formal paper, you are to discuss the gender roles in the stories we have gone over. A gender role is a kind of social construct that tells us how men and women are “supposed” to behave. For example, 1950s gender roles dictated that women were supposed to be homemakers and were supposed to look after the children.

Thesis-centered research essay:

Consider the gender roles that men and women have in the stories. What roles seem typical of men in the various stories? What roles are typical of women in the stories? How do the women and/or men reinforce and/or challenge the gender roles of their social context?

Some Advice: The last question is the heart of your argument for Paper 2. The initial questions are meant for you to identify the gender roles, even though you are to consider how these gender roles are reinforced or challenged by specific characters in the stories. Make sure to differentiate how one story might portray gender roles in one way, while other stories may portray gender roles in another way. In other words, there may be some overlap in how gender roles operate in two stories, while they may differ drastically in a third story. This might mean that you can group certain stories or characters together to discuss how they represent a certain kind of gender role.
