Racism in America

Racism in America prevailed as the American born citizens of Asian descent were treated as inferiors. They were not regarded as equal. They faced discrimination and humiliation. He showed such type of discrimination in his art. He has always focused on social and political issues of Asian Americans which were the victims of racism. Racism is one of the social issues of public concern.  To highlight this issue, roger shimomura tried to make paintings which showed sufferings of those who were treated as inferiors. The theme of his art work mainly focused on the challenges faced by the Asian Americans in the America as they were regarded as different. As a young child, he has also suffered such discrimination during World War II when his family was shifted from his hometown Seattle to the internment Minidoka camp at Idaho in Japan. In Minidoka camp, they spent 2 years after that they moved to Chicago where they lived for a very few months and then they return to the district of Seattle after the end of the war in 1945. His paintings were also inspired by the writings of his grandmother which were kept safe in the diaries. His painting series Minidoka on my mind is based on his family’s experience during World War II when his family suffered when they were relocated from their hometown to the Minidoka camp in Idaho, Japan. This series of art shows how U.S. government detained Japanese Americans during World War II. The U.S. government treated them badly and rendered them homeless. This treatment was given due to the prejudicial discrimination against them. This happened after the attack on pearl harbor.
