Relationships are constantly changing

Relationships are constantly changing and history has proven that you cannot control who you love regardless of their race. You can’t control anything when it comes to love.  When these people form a union and bring children into the world, it can be hard for these children to try to identify who they are and what their racial role is in society today. The article of Linda Howard just gives one isolated view on how bi-racial children experience everyday social interactions. The article details Linda’s perspectives on herself as a product of an interracial relationship.

Linda Howard’s story is one of struggle, and success, but also one of privilege. Privileged because some bi-racial children aren’t given the opportunity to know both parents, their history, and their culture. One parent could not be in the home or not a part of the child’s life for whatever reason; leaving that child with a lack of identity and the pleasure of experiencing the best of both races, essentially the best things of both cultures. Linda is a brave girl and she knows who she is and who she wants to be.  “My father’s Black, My mother’s White, I’m mixed” (p.86/3).  Some may see her points or views as an “issues of identity” (p. 93/10). Being mixed is her identity she is embracing and is proud to be both races, that is not an identity struggle at all.

Instead of taking her view as a stand the author noted throughout the commentary that there are feelings of pain and frustration, not only Linda’s situation but in others “mixed” (p.86/3) children as well. Linda does not seem to be struggling at all with self- identification, she is struggling with the racial labels of society in today’s times. It’s important to her that not only the people that she knows but also government institutions acknowledge both races when identifying who she is. The perfect example is the check the box option on her college applications, the biggest and most important thing to Linda is recognition not just for one race but for all. According to the commentary in some urban areas, 1 in 6 children are multiracial, those 5 check the box options are recognizing all multiracial races.

This article was written to attract people and educate them to the needs of change. There has been an issue developing and changing the way that people are comfortable identifying themselves; “the existing psychological models of racial and cultural identity development have not yet caught up with the reality of a rapidly expanding multiracial and multiethnic population. As a result, young people are still adversely affected by mixed-race heritage” (p. 93/10).

Children of interracial relationships are often looked down upon or treated like outcasts, bullied by both or their parent’s races leaving these children to feel “less authentic” (p. 93/10). Less of a form as a whole, less than what everyone else is. This is an important issue because no child should feel that way about their race, the external picture of who they are. Before people can see anything inside of you, the first thing that they see is your skin. Often times people use your complexion to make an assumption of not only your race but your demeanor as well. As an inspiring educator, it’s important not to make assumptions about these children’s race and not to make assumptions of their values and abilities because of their race.
