Course Objectives:

  • Relate central ideas of specific literary works to contemporary issues.
  • Define key literary terms, such as plot, character, setting, point of view, figurative language, symbolism, and style.

Assignment

To receive full credit for this Discussion Forum assignment and to facilitate an academic discussion, the following 3 parts need to be completed:

  1. Primary Task Response: Must be posted in the forum 5 days prior to the Part 3 due date.
  2. Peer Response: Must be posted 2 days prior to Part 3 due date.
  3. Summary Response: Must be posted by due date listed in assignment list.

Part 1: Primary Task

Within the Discussion Forum area, write up to 200 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples from the plays read in class to reinforce your ideas:

puns, personifications, hyperbole, alliteration, and onomatopoeia into logos, menus, signage, commercials, and radio ads. Often, restaurants will come up with playful names based off of literature. An example of puns can be found in the Middle Eastern restaurant namedPita Pan and a bar named Tequila Mockingbird.

Search for 2 different examples of figurative language used in the culinary world from the following list: puns, personifications, hyperbole, alliteration, and onomatopoeia. Answer the following:

  • What type of figurative language is being used? Is it effective?
  • What tone does it set for the business?
  • If the figurative language is used in a restaurant name - would you eat there? Why or why not?
  • If the figurative language is used for a menu item - would you eat it? Why or why not?

Next, imagine you are opening up your own venue - use a pun to come up with a title for your business. Share the title with your peers.

Part 2: Peer Responses

Your responses should be posted after the Primary Task Response (Part 1).

Respond to at least 2 of your fellow classmates with a response of at least 75 words about their Primary Task Response regarding items you found to be compelling and enlightening. To help you with your discussion, please consider the following questions:

  • What questions do you have after reading your classmates’ posting?
  • What clarification do you need after reading your classmates’ posting?
  • How can you relate this topic to your life or career?

Part 3: Summary Response

The summary should be posted after the Responses to Other Students (Part 2).

Write at least 100 words that summarize the Primary Task Responses and Responses to Other Students posted by you and your classmates. Consider the following questions in your summary of the discussion:

  • What have you learned from others' responses?
  • What example best relates to your life or career, and why?
