I had the pleasure to assist to the well-known classical dance production “Romeo and Juliet,” presented by the X Ballet in the X Center. I found myself surrounded by elegantly dressed people, transmitting respect to the context, for which I tried to adjust myself as well. The context was not just evaluated by the performance we were awaiting, it was also marked by the design of the theater, a well decorated and lightened place, suggesting that the performance should meet the quality of the expectation created by the room. It was a ballet interpretation of the choreography created by John Cranko in 1962, to recreate the famous Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet. The music used was composed by Sergei Prokofiev, inspired in the same play but finished in 1935. Each dance number had its respective prerecorded music, when there were romantic dances, the music was delicate and sounded passionate, when there were tragic dance numbers, the music was intense and sharp. There was a perfect connection and selection of both music and choreography. Each act of this ballet narrated the short love story of the young Romeo and Juliet, who fell in lovedisregarding their families’ rifts, which lead to the tragic dead of both of the lovers.
There were many dance pieces in groups, mostly representing their everyday lives, asRomeo and Juliet’s interaction with their respective family and friends. For me, one of the most intense numbers, was the one related to the confrontation between Romeo and Juliet’s cousin, performed by a big group of dancers making fascinating movements that transmitted fury, melancholy and sorrow. As spectator it is hard to pay attention to each of the dancers, but as an overview I consider that they were well prepared and knew how to coordinate their movements with great expertise. My favorite player was the dancer representing Juliet, she dominated ballet techniques in a beautiful and admirable manner, she knew how to move her body with gracefulness through all the complex choreography that was assigned to her. This dancer made everythinglook flow naturally, like it was not a previously trained interpretation. Besides the performance of the dancers, another factor that made this ballet to look so real, was their costumes, the objects used in stage, as was the simulation of the balcony from where Juliet waited for Romeo.
I find body language to be an attractive way of communication, and even though is not the way in which we communicate in our daily lives, it is still effective. In particular this ballet aroused in me, feelings such as anger and irritation when Juliet’s parents tried to force her to get married with a man she did not love. I also felt sorrow and empathy when looking at Romeo drinking the poison because he preferred to die than live without Juliet, who was not dead, but asleep and who ended up with her own life after seeing him dead. All the suffering that the Shakespeare’s tragic novel enfolds, was greatly represented by the dancers’ body expressions. X Ballet delivered such a good performance, that one could understand and feel the story, without having read it before.
