Spiritual care is a basic part of nursing which sometimes is neglected. A nurse should treat the patient, physically, mentally and spiritually.

My definition of spiritual care is the care that is given to the human spirit in times of sadness, sickness and upset. It is the care that gives a person self-worth, the way to express yourself, support in faith such as prayer and for some it is the receiving of the sacrament. It is care that is given which is compassionate and encouraging to a person in times of stress. My understanding of spiritual care is making a person “whole” again. You are dealing with the complete being not parts of it.

When you provide such care, you provide trust, hope, strength, purpose, meaning. You understand the values that are important to the person and their morality, relationships, creativity and self-expression. When you provide spiritual care, you try and bring hope, enlightenment and a future for that person. Spiritual care is for all persons regardless of type of religion. Everyone has a need for “spiritual care."

Christian spirituality per Shelly is a personal relationship with God.
