summary of (Pico Iyer's essay "Chapels" - The Norton Sampler pages 382-389)
Write a summary for the essay. Exclusive from any short quotations and the MLA heading information, the summary should be between 175 and 200 words long. You do not need to include a Works Cited list for this summary. You do need to include the author and the title of the essay you are summarizing.
These will be graded by the Writing Program Revised Rubric posted on bblean.
The summary should not state your opinion but should state the important points (in your own words) of the essay in the order in which the author presents them, tied together by transitional words or phrases. You may quote the author in your summary if you would like to do so.
Your summary should begin with a signal phrase (see pages 456 and 85-87 of the Harbrace Essentials 2nd ed. for definition, discussion and examples of signal phrases). You are likely to need to remind your reader in the body of the summary that the author is the source of the ideas, so include more than one signal phrase in your summary.
Additionally, use transitions between ideas. Transitions are discussed on pages 18-21 of the Harbrace Essentials 2nd ed. A chart of some “commonly used transitions” is on page 21.
To reiterate, the summary should be in MLA format: double spaced, one-inch margins, Times New Roman, size-twelve font, MLA heading information. Be sure to edit your summary so that each is correctly and clearly written so your summaries can earn good grades.
