Assignment Instructions:

Response Essay writing is informal. Your Response Essay should be between 3 and 3 ½ pages. You can write longer; maximum length is five pages. The second essay must compare or contrast two short stories (see last paragraph). Response Writing assignments are one of the best ways to measure your ability to analyze, synthesis and construct your own thoughts about a subject area.

Since you normally respond personally and independently to a story as a reader, your writing will reveal your personal, in-depth view as well. Stories affect readers in different ways. Likewise, your writing will be your own insight into a story. You do not have to research or cite other sources. The Response essay is your elaboration on the element(s) or aspect(s) of a story you find interesting, fascinating, moving, highly effective, curious, or worthy of writing about.

Explore how the elements of Characterization or Setting are used in the two stories that you select. How does that element or component work in the story? How is it related to the story? IT'S IMPORTANT TO OFFER YOUR OPINION AS LONG AS IT'S SUPPORTED BE EXAMPLES FROM THE STORY. Always provide illustrations and examples from the story itself.
