Your paper proposals should include the following:

 

Subject of your paper: What is the topic of your paper? Please be specific. Include the (big) research question, the (medium) theory you will be assessing, and (little) hypothesis(ses) that you will test derived from this theory.

 

Your thesis statement: Clearly specify your expectations for the hypothesis and theory. Do not over think your thesis statement - it will probably change and improve in each draft. For now, however, your thesis should come from your research interests, understanding and beliefs about the issue at hand.

 

An Explanation of the Thesis: Give an explanation of why you believe that the thesis will be upheld, referencing literature and theory.

 

An explanation of your methods: Give an overview of how you plan to test the hypothesis(ses). What is/are the cases you will analyze?

 

A Tentative List of References: The second page of your paper proposal should be a tentative list of sources. Although your list of references in the final paper will be simple, this list of references should be briefly annotated (i.e. what is this book/article about).  There should be at least one book references out of four scholarly sources in total.

Additional Information:

Your intended audience: Assume a learned but not omniscient audience. Explain important concepts as you write from a learned perspective (i.e. do the research and know the subject).  

APSA Documentation Style: Please use APSA citation style guidelines (guide available online: http://writing.wisc.edu/Handbook/DocAPSA.html). I will also accept APA or Chicago-style citations but prefer APSA if possible. You must also be prepared to show me the hard copies of your sources if asked to do so.

Paper Length and Writing: The paper proposal must be written as an essay. In addition, the essays must be free of major grammatical and mechanical errors. Do not over-use first person language or cliché phrases in your writing. The proposal does not have a strict page minimum or maximum. It will take you at least half a page to address all the parts listed above and you will need a page for your list of tentative sources. Beyond that expectation, the length will be determined by your topic and your ability to clearly convey your topic and thesis.
