please download the two short articles, on a famous skyscraper design in Manhattan and some design flaws that were discovered after the building was built. I would read the article from the New Yorker first, and then the second article. Without going into overly technical details, give your own opinion about the roles played by the structural engineer, the architects, and other people and/or entities involved in rectifying this flaw. Specifically, do you think this was handled correctly, from the point of view of the safety of the public? Also, do you think it was handled correctly from the point of view of the other stakeholders in the building, such as the insurance companies, the property owners, and leasors (renters)? Do you think that these two groups, which I will call "inner" stakeholders and the public, are necessarily in conflict? Give reasons for your answers to each of these questions. Before you get started on your answers to these questions, make sure that you understand the basic technical issue that the building design was meant to address - at least create a picture in your mind of the structure, or better yet, find an archival photo of the original building design.
