2 Systems of stratification and the social inequality that they produce are often supported
by specific ideologies. India's system of stratification, which is referred to as a caste
system, has existed for thousands of years and is supported by certain features of the Hindu
belief system (namely, reincarnation and karma). Other caste systems, which are not
necessarily rooted in religious or spiritual beliefs, have existed in societies other than India
during different time periods. Describe the role that religion has on justifying India's caste
system and keeping it in place for thousands of years and attempt to contrast India's caste
system to another non-Indian caste system of your choice (Apartheid in S. Africa and the
U.S. Racial Caste System--Jim Crow period-- are popular choices). What ideologies
supported the non-Indian caste systems? Why does the Indian caste system persist even
after discrimination based on caste was outlawed in the Indian constitution?
I ll need at least 200 words for the second question and will try to upload a power point
about system stratification
