narrative Essay
Â
My assignment is to write a 750-word narrative essay about an experience I had when my emotional intelligence or the lack of caused me to make a decision that had a powerful effect in my life. Â
To prepare for writing this essay, the tutor's instructions are as follows:
Â
This assignment should be more descriptive and artistic in presentation of details.Â
Â
You may write in first person and don't need to use any outside sources, although you may wish to include some background information from one or more of the sources that you've examined this week.
Â
1. Watch presentations on emotional intelligence.Â
1. Read "Shame" by Dick Gregory as a sample of narrative writing. Note his use of description and dialogue. Plan to use both in your essay. This essay is available through Google.
2. Review the following chapters from the textbook: Describing, page 399; Dialogue, page 408; Narrating,  page 419.Â
3. Review the instructions for writing a college level essay again.Â
OrganizationÂ
In the introduction, open with an attention getter, such as a quote, image, startling detail or statistic. Avoid dictionary definitions and other cliche openers. Next,  provide background information so that the reader will understand who you were before you had this experience and why it was powerful for you. It would also be appropriate for you to include background information on emotional intelligence. Finally, include a thesis statement, a one sentence summary of the idea that you are forwarding in the paper.Â
In the body, you will relate the story. Do so in chronological order and use elements denoting time to open each major section of thought, such as at first, suddenly, in the beginning, early that morning, after that, etc. It is possible to relate a story with flashbacks but difficult to do in a 750 word freshman essay so it's best to stay in past tense and relate the story in chronological order. Use dialogue. Follow instructions in the text or in the model essay on how to include dialogue. Be descriptive. This is very important in narrative writing. Your task is to make an ordinary day into an extraordinary event for the reader.Â
In the conclusion, discuss the changes that occurred in your life as a result of this experience.Â
