Assignment #3: NASA’s Mars rover “Curiosity”
Due: Saturday, 6/17/2017 @ 11:59 PM
We are turning our attention to Chapter 4 and some topics contained in it. The assignment for this
chapter is: I have picked out some videos from Youtube that discuss the results, and some of the
technology, from NASA’s latest Mars rover, the Curiosity. The primary video, which is about
1½ hours long, is a JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) talk, from January, 2014, titled
“Curiosity’s First year on Mars.” It basically discusses the scientific results obtained so far
(as of 2014) by the rover Curiosity as it makes its way up Mount Sharp on the Martian
surface. Your job is to find as many of the different scientific findings contained in this
presentation, and to summarize, in your own words, what they mean for the overall picture of
Mars as a planet – presence of water long ago and/or at present, type of atmosphere on Mars,
possible geological history of Mars as compared to Earth, etc. This video can be found at the
link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-RzZ5ZsT0s . Remember, the link is case-sensitive, the
dash is NOT an underscore, and the next to last symbol is a “0” (zero), not “O”. I have also
found a short video on the different technologies used to conduct the science experiments on
Curiosity, titled “Curiosity’s Revolutionary Experiments” (about 16:40 long). It can be found
at this link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kHBPc943sg .
