1. Make sure that you choose a song whose lyrics can be interpreted in the same way you would interpret a poem. You want to make sure that the lyrics contain the same kind of figurative devices and depth of meaning that you could find in a good poem. Many times writers will choose a song because it means something to them personally without really looking at the song objectively to see how that song builds its meaning poetically.
