Discussion Topics for the Industrial Revolution:

1. The introduction to this section in your book quotes Alex de Tocqueville's thoughts on the impact of industrialization: "From this foul drain, the greatest stream of human industry flows out to fertilize the whole world.  From this filthy sewer pure gold flows.  Here humanity attains its most complete development and its most brutish, here civilization works its miracles and civilized man is turned into a savage" (1580).  Explain what you think de Tocqueville means and use one text from those assigned in this section to illustrate your analysis.

2. One of the major challenges faced by writers seeking to portray the sufferings of the working classes was how to give them a voice.  Select one text from the section and discuss how the author successfully provides that voice. Make sure to use a quote to illustrate and support your analysis.

3. Explicitly or implicitly, several writers in this section use slavery as a metaphor for the industrial worker's condition.  Select one of these texts and discuss how the author employs the metaphor.
