Excessive Use of Force
In the chapter readings this module, we saw how many of the police misconduct complaints are associated with the excessive use of force by officers. Unlike premeditated police corruption, the excessive use of force often occurs in the “heat of the moment.” Yet the consequences can be just as serious to a police department’s reputation as an act of premeditated police misconduct, such as accepting a bribe or ripping off drug dealers.
Identify a minimum of three approaches that police agencies take to prevent or mitigate the excessive use of force by their officers. Evaluate the relative strengths and weaknesses of each, and provide your recommendation as to which ones you would use if you were the head of the police department or law enforcement agency. Support your recommendations with facts, and/or a well-reasoned argument
