Social damage often occurs after a disaster. A disaster is an event, generally unexpected, that causes extensive harm to people and damage to property. Disasters can be natural, technological, or intentional. We have been witness to recent disasters such as the floods in Houston, the mass shooting in Orlando, and terrorist attacks all over the world.
Â
In March 2011, an earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster occurred in Japan. This event includes two types of disasters - natural and man-made. Although the total effects of these disasters may not be realized for years, immediate effects can be identified as well as ongoing challenges.
- Identify two ways in which the disaster will socially affect the Japanese people as a whole, or the entire population of the planet.
- Physical damage is often easy to see at the beginning of a disaster. Social damage occurs slowly and is not as evident. What social damage is evident to you in this disaster? Give two examples. Justify your responses.
- Include references to the text material or other scholarly resources.
