Video Analysis and Discussion Posting
Topic: The Social Construction of Beauty?
Objective:
To apply one of the four sociological perspectives (Ch 1) to a current YouTube video
regarding the topics of culture (Ch3), socialization (Ch 4), and mass media (Ch 10).
Step 1: Search YouTube for the video "Beauty Pressure"
and/or "Onslaught" presented by the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. You will see
a young school girl followed by a variety of images presented in the media. Alternately,

Step 2: Watch the video again and consider what the four sociological perspectives
would have to say about this video. Apply the perspectives by asking yourself the
following questions: What would a SF(Structural Functionalist) say about this video?
What would a theorist from the Feminist Analysis (FA) perspective say? What would
a Symbolic Interactionist (SI) say? What would a Social Conflict (SC) theorist say?
Step 3: Select one sociological perspective (Ch1) and apply it (connect it) to the video
by writing a response in the discussion forum. If you were a theorist from the _______
perspective, what would you say about this video?
Step 4: Attempt to connect other sociological terms you have learned from Chapters 3
(culture), 5 (socialization),10(mass media).
Guidelines:
a) Submit one post 500-700 words in length. Also submit a copy of your post to the
DropBox.
b) Include sociological terms in bold or italics.
c) Reply to one other post (at least one paragraph required).
d) You may work individually or with a partner (only one post and one peer reply
required). Make sure both names are included in your post and peer reply.
Tip: Did you create a study tool(chart) when prompted in Unit#3? Did you create a chart
about the four theoretical perspectives? If so, use that chart to help you 'apply' or
connect the perspectives to the video. You will be able to read your class mate's postings once you have made your post.
