This piece of reading (as attached) is the first chapter of The Sociological Imagination, written by American sociologists Wright Mills in 1959. In the article, Mills illustrates his idea of the sociological imagination, which is still influential in the contemporary discipline of sociology.Â
How to read the article:
1) This is an important, but also challenging piece. So, read the session in the textbook chapter on the sociological imagination before you come to read this article.
2) It is very common if you find it difficult to understand it in the first time you read this piece. Give yourself some extra time to reread it, and maybe again.
3) Highlight key sentences as you read.
4) Think about the functions of each component in this article: which is the introductory part? Where are the key argument placed? Which part provides examples that the author uses to illustrate his arguments? You don’t need to struggle with every single sentence that does not make sense to you. Instead, try to grasp the main arguments that the author makes here.
Questions for the analytical paper:
1) According to your reading of the article (not the textbook chapter), what is the sociological imagination? Why do we need the sociological imagination to make sense of the history of our society, as well as our own biography? Use your own words to demonstrate your understanding.
2) Give one example of personal trouble of you or people around you. And explain how it can also be a public issue and be related to changes happening in the society at large.
